SUNDAY'S KEY TIGERS
Wielinski, who won the 1650 free at the 2017 Western Athletic Conference Championships while at North Dakota, dropped almost 15 full seconds off his previous school record to take second in the event. The junior posted a 14:44.24 Sunday night, crushing his old mark of 14:59.10 set in November. Wielinski also broke his own 1,000 free program record as he went 8:56.10 over the first 1,000 yards of the race.
Also claiming a podium finish was senior Madeline McKernan (Montgomery, Texas). She tallied a season-best 287.7 points in the final to place third in the women's platform competition. It marked her second top four platform finish at SECs, as she took fourth as a sophomore in 2016.
In the women's 1650 free, junior Courtney Evensen (Golden Valley, Minn.) also swam a huge personal best to earn fifth-place. She touched in 16:11.10, lowering her old previous best by over 12 seconds, and was less than a second off Mizzou's 1000 free school record during the race. The junior improved by 13 placements from last year's SEC Championships, when she took 18th overall.
Three more Tigers claimed top seven finishes during Sunday night action. Senior Annie Ochitwa (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) placed fifth in the women's 100 free in 48.34, sophomore Nick Alexander (Crestwood, Mo.) took sixth in the men's 200 back after a swim of 1:41.82, and unior Mikel Schreuders (Oranjestad, Aruba) added a seventh-place finish in the 10 free with a time of 43.02.
Missouri closed the meet with its sixth and final school record in the women's 400 free relay. Ochitwa, Stevens, and seniors Erin Metzger-Seymour (Westminster, Colo.) and Sharli Brady (Burlington, Ky.) notched a 3:15.25 to take fifth overall and break the previous mark of 3:15.53 set in November.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Greg Rhodenbaugh on the meet…
"We had some great swims and set some school records to put us in the top half for the men and the women. We finished well. We just need more rest and we'll get ready for NCAAs."
On the performances of Mizzou's milers on Sunday…
"Jacob's (Wielinski) swim was outstanding. He and Courtney (Evensen) started off the meet in the mile, and they were awesome. They both punched their tickets to NCAAs."
Mizzou Head Diving Coach Jamie Sweeney on Madeline McKernan's performance…
"I was very happy with how (Madeline McKernan) competed today. It was really fun to see her get up there, love the sport of diving, and get excited about doing the dive that we were on right then. Forget about the meet, forget about the judges, and just be excited about putting down the dive that's on the scoreboard, and she did. She had a blast today, and when you have fun you dive well. And when you dive well you have fun."
UP NEXT
