STORYLINES
- The No. 10 Mizzou gymnastics team opens the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, Jan. 19 when the team hosts No. 13 Auburn at 1 p.m. at Mizzou Arena. The No. 5 Mizzou wrestling team will also take on Central Michigan in the Beauty and the Beast event.
- The Tigers moved up one spot to No. 10 in this week's national poll. Auburn is ranked No. 13.
- The national ranking is the highest for Missouri since the team clocked in at No. 8 on Jan. 16, 2017.
- Mizzou also ranks tied for sixth on beam (49.100), tied for seventh on floor (49.125) , 14th on vault (48.975) and 23rd on bars (48.750) after two weeks.
- Last time out, Missouri tallied season-bests on all four events in a 197.300-196.450 loss at preseason No. 3 Floriday on Jan. 11. The team total was a full point higher than the Tigers went in the season opener.
- The Tigers did not record a score lower than 9.725 in the meet against the Gators.
- Freshman Hannah McCrary tied for the vault title at Florida to claim the first event win of her Mizzou career.
- The Tigers scored 49 or better on all four events, with a 49.200 on floor, 49.125s on bars and beam and 49.000 on vault.
- Missouri opened the season with a first-place finish in a quad meet against No. 20 Arizona State, No. 23 Minnesota and UIC on Jan. 4 in Tempe, Ariz. The Tigers scored 195.450 points, ahead of the Sun Devils (195.000), Golden Gophers (194.150) and Flames (193.925).
- Senior Britney Ward was named the SEC Specialist of the Week on Jan. 8 after her performance at the Arizona State quad meet. Ward took home the beam title with a 9.95, her sixth career score of 9.95 or higher.
- Redshirt senior Becca Schugel has returned to the lineup after missing most of the 2018 season with a season-ending Achilles injury
- Three Tigers made their official lineup debut at Arizona State on Jan. 4, as sophomores Chelsey Christensen and Paige Kovnesky and freshman Hannah McCrary represented Mizzou for the first time.
- The 2019 regular season features 15 matchups with 14 teams ranked in the top 25, including 10 meets against top 10 opponents.
- Head Coach Shannon Welker is in his sixth year at the helm of the Tiger program. Last season, Welker and the Tigers earned three top 10 wins, including a victory over No. 5 Florida.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Missouri gymnastics team tallied season-bests on all four events in a 197.300-196.450 loss at preseason No. 3 Floriday on Jan. 11.
- Freshman Hannah McCrary tied for the vault title in only her second collegiate meet, with a 9.875 on the event.
- A strong start on bars in the opening rotation put the Tigers on the road to success early. The team went 49.125 on the event as five Tigers scored a 9.8 or higher. Senior Madeleine Huber and redshirt junior Morgan Porter both led Mizzou with 9.85s and redshirt senior Becca Schugel went 9.825. Additionally, junior Aspen Tucker earned a 9.8, as did sophomore Chelsey Christensen.
- McCrary's 9.875 anchored the second rotation on vault as the team scored a 49.000. Tucker and senior Britney Ward, who made her 2019 vault lineup debut, both went 9.8s, while Porter earned a 9.775 and Huber a 9.75.
- A 49.200 on floor, highlighted from a 9.875 from Tucker, put the Tigers in line for an impressive score with only one rotation left. Senior Allison Bower and McCrary both earned 9.85s, junior Mary Nicholson went 9.825 and Porter added a 9.8.
- Closing the meet on beam, Mizzou responded with a 49.125 to close the night. Only a week after making her beam debut, Nicholson nailed her routine to tally a team-high 9.875 in the second spot in the lineup. Ward closed the meet with a 9.85, while Bower posted a 9.825 and sophomore Gabrielle Gottula went 9.8.
UP NEXT
- Mizzou travels to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in the Metroplex Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 26. The Tigers will face off against No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 8 Denver and No. 14 Arkansas at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
MISSOURI CLOCKS IN AT NO. 10 IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
- Mizzou moved up one spot to No. 10 in this week's national rankings with an average score of 195.950
- The national ranking is the highest for Missouri since the team clocked in at No. 8 on Jan. 16, 2017
- The Tigers also rank sixth on beam, seventh on floor, 14th on vault and 23rd on bars
MIZZOU POSTS SEASON-BESTS ON ALL FOUR EVENTS AT FLORIDA
- Mizzou improved on all four events at Florida on Jan. 11, posting at least 49 on all apparatuses.
- The Tigers' full point team score improvement from week one to week two was due more consistency on all four individual events.
- Mizzou's biggest improvement came on bars, where the team went 49.125 at Florida after a 48.375 at the Arizona State Quad Meet.
- The team also upped its scores on floor (49.200 from 49.050), beam (49.125 from 49.075) and vault (49.000 from 49.950).
MCCRARY CLAIMS VAULT CROWN AT FLORIDA
- Freshman Hannah McCrary claimed a share of the vault title in Mizzou's meet at Florida on Jan. 11.
- It was the first event title of the freshman's Mizzou career.
- McCrary earned a career-best 9.875 on her Yurchenko 1.5 at the meet, marking the first time she competed the 10.0 vault in collegiate competition.
- She also went personal-best 9.850 on floor at Florida.
- After two weeks of competition, McCrary owns averages of 9.838 on vault and 9.8 on floor.
TIGERS FACE TOUGH 2019 SLATE
- The 2019 regular season features 15 matchups with 14 teams ranked in the top 25, including 10 meets against top 10 opponents
- Overall, Mizzou faces off against No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 LSU, No. 5 Utah, No. 6 Alabama, No. 7 Georgia, No. 9 Michigan, No. 10 Kentucky, No. 12 Arkansas, No. 13 Denver, No. 14 Auburn, No. 20 Arizona State, No. 21 Stanford and No. 23 Minnesota. The Tigers actually take on LSU twice during the regular season.
WARD NAMED SEC SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK
- Senior Britney Ward was named the Southeastern Conference Specialist of the Week, the league office announced on Jan. 8.
- It marked the third SEC weekly honor of her career, as Ward also claimed Specialist and Freshman of the Week honors as a freshman in 2016.
- Ward claimed the beam event title as Mizzou took first in a quad meet against No. 20 Arizona State, No. 23 Minnesota and UIC in Tempe, Ariz., on Jan. 4. She anchored the Tigers' first rotation with a 9.95, a score that held up as the highest of the night on beam. The score was good enough to rank her tied for second nationally on the event after one week of competition.
- The win was the 29th event title of her Tiger career, including her 16th on beam. It also marked the sixth time in Ward's career she scored a 9.95 or better, which ranks as the second most in Mizzou history. Additionally, it was the 19th time in 40 career beam routines she posted at least a 9.9.
THREE TIGERS MAKE DEBUTS
- Three Tigers made their official lineup debut at Arizona State on Jan. 4, as sophomores Chelsey Christensen and Paige Kovnesky and freshman Hannah McCrary represented Mizzou.
- Christensen, who exhibitioned as a freshman in 2018, was in Missouri's bar lineup. She righted the ship after two falls to open the rotation with a 9.725.
- Kovnesky posted a 9.7 on vault, going in the second position
- McCrary was in both the vault and floor lineups in the season opener, anchoring vault with a 9.8 and earning a 9.75 on floor.
- Additionally, junior Mary Nicholson competed in the beam lineup for the first time in her career and notched a 9.75.
TUCKER, WARD CLAIM EVENT WINS IN SEASON OPENER
- Senior Britney Ward and junior Aspen Tucker both took home event wins in the Tigers' quad meet against Arizona State, Minnesota and UIC on Jan. 4.
- Tucker tied for first on floor with a career-high-tying 9.9. It was her 11th career event title but her first-ever win on the floor exercise.
- Ward scored a 9.95 to win beam and claim the 29th event title of her career, including the 16th on beam.
SCHUGEL MAKES HER RETURN
- Mizzou's meet on Jan. 4 marked the return of redshirt senior Becca Schugel, who suffered a season-ending injury in January of last season.
- The fifth-year gymnast tore her Achilles tendon during practice after seeing action in only two meets during her senior season in 2018.
- Schugel competed on bars at Arizona State and posted a 9.825 on the event.
- Schugel is a three-time All-SEC performer over her first three-plus years with the Tigers, as she earned floor honors in 2017, beam honors in 2016 and All-Freshman Team acolades in 2015
- She earned her bachelor's degree in health science in May 2018 and is currently enrolled in Mizzou's accelerated nursing program.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT...AUBURN
- Auburn enters Saturday ranked No. 13 in the national poll.
- Last time out, the Tigers knocked off No. 4 LSU, 196.700-196.225, on Jan. 11 to end LSU's 17-match winning streak in SEC meets (regular season meets only)
- Both Abby Milliet and Derrian Gobourne were honored by the SEC this week for their performances against LSU, with Milliet taking home SEC Specialist of the Week and Gobourne earning SEC Freshman of the Week.
