COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 17 Mizzou gymnastics team travels to Cape Girardeau, Mo., this weekend to face Lindenwood and host Southeast Missouri State in the State of Missouri Meet on Sunday, March 10 at 1 p.m.
STORYLINES
- The Tigers dropped one spot to No. 17 in this week's national rankings.
- Mizzou also ranks 13th nationally on floor, 19th on vault, 20th on bars and 17th on beam.
- Last time out, Missouri defeated No.10 Kentucky, 196.250-196.000, in Hearnes Center.
- Missouri closed the meet with a season-best 49.400 on floor, which tied for the sixth-best score on the event in program history and was the highest score since Feb. 5, 2016 (against Lindenwood and Southeast Missouri).
- The Tigers closed the meet against the Wildcats with three 9.9s, as sophomore Gabrielle Gottula, junior Aspen Tucker and redshirt junior Morgan Porter all earned the score. The 9.9 was a career-high for Gottula on the event.
- Mizzou's win over Kentucky was the team's first top 10 win of the season and the first since it knocked off No. 5 Florida on March 2, 2018.
- Mizzou is one of only five teams nationally that has scored 49 or better on floor in every meet in 2019, joining No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Florida, No. 5 Utah and No. 15 Oregon State.
- Additionally, the Tigers have gone at least 49 on floor in 10 conecutive meets, dating back to the 2018 NCAA Regional. The 10-meet span is a program record, besting the seven meet stretch from Feb. 19 - April 10, 2010.
- Against Alabama on Feb. 1, the Tigers scored at least 49.100 on all four events for the first time this season and the fourth time under Head Coach Shannon Welker's tenure at Mizzou.
- The previous times Missouri went 49.100 on all events under Welker was at the State of Missouri Meet on March 16, 2018, against Auburn on March 3, 2017 and at Florida on Feb. 24, 2017.
- The only two other times Mizzou tallied 49.1 on all four events were at the Cat Classic on Feb. 6, 2004 and at the Texas Woman's Invitational on March 12, 2004.
- Five different Tigers have made their competitive debuts so far this season: sophomores Lauren Clevenger, Chelsey Christensen and Paige Kovnesky, and freshmen Frances Bidwill and Hannah McCrary. McCrary has made the vault and floor lineups, Bidwill, Christensen and Kovnesky in the vault and bars lineups, and Clevenger made her debut on beam.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Mizzou gymnastics team posted a 49.400 on floor in the final rotation to ice a 196.250-196.000 upset of No. 10 Kentucky on March 1 at the Hearnes Center. The Tigers, who clung to a 146.850-146.800 advantage heading into the final rotation, tied for the sixth-highest floor score in program history to clinch the victory of the Wildcats.
- The victory was the Tigers' first win over a top 10 opponent this season, and the first since they took down No. 5 Florida on March 2, 2018.
- Redshirt senior Morgan Porter tallied a season-high 39.325 to win the all-around, and also tied teammates for the bars and floor titles. She and redshirt senior Becca Schugel tallied meet-best 9.85s on bars, while Porter, junior Aspen Tucker and sophomore Gabrielle Gottula all went 9.9 on floor to tie for the win.
- Leading by only half a tenth after three rotations, Missouri responded with a 49.400 on floor to close the meet. The team floor total was a season-high and tied for the sixth-highest score on the event in program history. Gottula, Porter and Tucker, the final three Tiger routines of the night, all notched 9.9s, which was a career-high for Gottula. Senior Allison Bower and junior Mary Nicholson got the team going with 9.85s in the first two spots in the lineup, and senior Michaelee Turner added a 9.825.
- Missouri opened the meet with a 48.800 on vault. Freshman Frances Bidwill (Phoenix, Ariz.) debuted her Yurchenko 1.5 to go for a career-best 9.85. Porter helped the Tigers with a 9.8 and Gottula added a 9.775.
- Porter and Schugel's 9.85s paced Mizzou to a 48.950 on bars in the second rotation. The duo were joined in the 9.8s by Tucker, who had a 9.8 in the leadoff spot. Senior Brooke Kelly and sophomore Chelsey Christensen both went 9.725 as well.
- A 49.100 on beam put the Tigers ahead of the Wildcats in the team race in the third rotation. Kelly paced Missouri with a season-best 9.85, while Bower, Gottula and Nicholson all posted 9.825s in the first three routines of the event. Porter also claimed a season-high 9.775 on the apparatus.
UP NEXT
- The Tigers conclude the regular season on Friday, March 15 in a home quad meet at the Hearnes Center. Mizzou will take on No. 7 Michigan, No. 10 Minnesota and Centenary at 7 p.m. on Senior Night.
MISSOURI CLOCKS IN AT NO. 17 IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
- Mizzou fell one spot to No. 17 in this week's national rankings with a National Qualifying Score of 196.255.
- The NQS is calculated by taking a team's top six scores, three of which must be from road or neutral meets, dropping the high score, and averaging the remaining five scores.
- The Tigers also rank 13th on floor, 17th on beam, 19th on vault and 20th on beam.
TIGERS HITTING ON FLOOR
- The Tigers are one of only five teams that have scored at least 49 on floor in every meet so far in 2019.
- Mizzou joins No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Florida, No. 5 Utah and No. 15 Oregon State as the only programs to reach the 49 mark on floor all year.
- The Tigers have floor scores of 49. 400 against Kentucky, 49.275 against Georgia, 49.225 at LSU, 49.200 against Alabama and at Florida and the Mardi Gras Invitational, at 49.100 at the Metroplex Challenge, 49.075 against Auburn at 49.050 at Arizona State to start the year.
MIZZOU IN PROGRAM-RECORD FLOOR STRETCH
- The Tigers are also in the midst of a program-record 10 meet stretch with scores of 49 or higher.
- Missouri's floor span dates back to the NCAA Regional on April 7, 2018 and includes every meet of 2019.
- The 10-meet span is a program-long for the Tigers, surpassing the previous high of seven set from Feb. 19, 2010 until April 10, 2010.
TIGERS TAKE DOWN NO. 10 KENTUCKY
- Missouri posted a 196.250-196.000 win over No. 10 Kentucky on March 1 for its first top 10 win of the season.
- It was also Mizzou's second Southeastern Conference win of the season, as the quad also downed Arkansas on Jan. 26.
- The win over the Wildcats was the Tigers' first over a top 10 team since they earned a 196.925-196.700 upset over No. 5 Florida on March 3, 2018.
