
Mizzou Soccer Draws with Ole Miss in SEC Opener

OXFORD, Miss. – Mizzou Soccer (6-2-1) opened SEC play with a 1-1 draw against Ole Miss (6-2-1), Friday night at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. The Tigers pushed the game into extra time with a goal from Blythe Beldner, who brought Mizzou back into the game in thrilling fashion, scoring the first goal of her collegiate career in the 77' minute.
After 110 minutes, neither team was able to score the go-ahead goal.
The Tigers were almost able to make it through the first half with a clean sheet, as first-year goalkeeper Peyton Bauman made five saves in the first period alone. With 30 seconds remaining in the period, Ole Miss' Molly Martin took a shot from inside the box for the go-ahead goal.
Mizzou fought off an Ole Miss (6-2-1) charge in the final five minutes, as the Rebels had three free kicks and one shot in the waning minutes of regulation. With Ole Miss charging just outside of the box in the final 15 seconds, Momola Adesanmi was able to clear the ball back to midfield, killing just enough time to send the game to overtime.
In the second overtime period, Sarah Luebbert brought an aggressive nature, giving Mizzou several chances in the first four minutes of the period. Ole Miss looked to get the deciding-goal in transition, but Bauman stepped up in the box on a 1-on-1 situation to deflect the ball out of bounds.
TURNING POINT
- Mizzou got outstanding play from goalkeeper Peyton Bauman in both overtime periods, as the redshirt sophomore combined for three saves in extra time.
- Bauman withstood an onslaught of shots from Ole Miss in the first overtime period, as the Rebels -Mizzou 7-1 in the period. Bauman was able to deflect a would-be goal at the line to keep the Tigers alive.
- Ole Miss again had would-be game winner fall short, as Channing Foster's shot from outside the box went off the crossbar in the final three minutes of action.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Blythe Beldner scored the first goal of her career in the 77' minute to provide Mizzou with the equalizer in the second half. Beldner finished the night with three shots, two on goal.
- Despite the first-half goal, goalkeeper Peyton Bauman recorded a career-high 12 saves on the night.
QUOTABLE
- "A point is a point," Mizzou Soccer head coach Bryan Blitz said. "When you get to SEC play, it turns into a math equation. We'll take however many points we get, especially one on the road."
NOTES
- The draw continues a streak of unbeaten starts for the Tigers in SEC play. Since joining the league in 2012, Mizzou is 7-0-1 in SEC openers, having outscored opponents 20-5 (+15) in conference openers.
- The draw moves Mizzou to 2-0-1 in overtime games this season.
- The Tigers came up with the draw despite being out-shot 28-19. It is only the second time Mizzou has been outshot this season.
Mizzou will be off this weekend and will return to action next Thursday at Florida, Sept. 26.
