COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri Volleyball team (12-5, 3-2 SEC) will host Mississippi State (7-7, 1-4 SEC) Sunday afternoon at the Hearnes Center to conclude the Tigers' four-match homestand.
First serve is set for 2 p.m., CT and the match will be broadcasted on SEC Network. Anne Marie Anderson and Leah Edmond will be on the call for Mizzou's second linear match of the campaign.
The Tigers rank first in the SEC for assists per set (13.51, fifth in NCAA), hitting percentage (.306), kills per set (14.36), assists (824), kills (876) and aces (123). Mizzou is also second in the conference for aces per set (2.02) and fifth for digs (857, 14.05 digs/set).
The Tigers are also 14th in the country (second in the SEC) for most effective teams based on expected points added per touch (0.03 avg EPA).
PROMOTIONS
• Celebrate Volloween with Mizzou Sunday at the Hearnes Center. Fans in attendance will receive tote bags and specialty posters, while supplies last.
• Fans are encouraged to wear their costumes and can Trick or Treat prematch on the concourse with Mizzou student-athletes. Best costume wins a Mizzou Volleyball Boo Basket.
• Sunday's match is also Teacher Appreciation Day.
SERIES HISTORY
• Mizzou leads the all-time series with Mississippi State, 16-4.
• The Tigers most recently swept the Bulldogs on Nov. 3, 2023, at the Hearnes Center.
ILIFF NAMED SEC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• Jordan Iliff was named the SEC Player of the Week and SEC Offensive Player of the Week Monday.
• She led the Mizzou offense this past week, totaling 52 kills (4.73 kills/set) on a .438 hitting percentage with 25 digs (2.27 kills/set) and nine aces (0.82 aces/set). Iliff has posted 14 or more kills in each of her last three matches.
• The senior notched 14 kills on a .500 hitting percentage to go with four aces against in-state foe Southeast Missouri on Oct. 9.
• Iliff then posted 17 kills and three aces to reach the career milestones of 1,000 kills and 100 aces against Alabama on Oct. 11. Iliff connected at a .500 rate, adding two blocks and two digs.
• The St. Louis native then registered 21 kills and a career-best 21 digs with two aces on a .364 clip in Mizzou's five-set victory over Tennessee (Oct. 13). It marked Iliff's eighth double-double of the season. She also notched her career-best 46th ace of the season Sunday after posting 45 in 2023. It also was Iliff's third 20-plus kill match in 2024.
• Iliff ranks first in the SEC (third in the NCAA) with 0.75 aces per set (46 aces). She is also third in the conference for points (293.5, 4.81 points/set, seventh) and sixth for kills (235, 3.85 kills/set, ninth).
• In SEC-only matches, she is first in the league with 17 aces (0.89 aces/set).
CROWNOVER TABBED SEC SETTER OF THE WEEK
• Marina Crownover earned SEC Setter of the Week Monday.
• Crownover compiled 130 assists (11.82 assists/set) and 20 digs (1.82 digs/set) as Mizzou hit .353 this past week. She has posted 30 or more assists in each of the last three matches.
• The redshirt sophomore tallied 30 assists with 10 digs against in-state foe Southeast Missouri on Oct. 9 for her fourth career double-double outing.
• Crownover then posted 44 assists to go along with three digs, two blocks and an ace in Mizzou's sweep of Alabama (Oct. 11).
• She then finished with 56 assists to go with seven digs and an ace in MU's win over Tennessee on Oct. 13. The 56 assists are her second-most this season and marks the third time in the 2024 campaign that she has exceeded 50 assists.
• Crownover ranks eighth in the SEC for assists (495, 9.90 assists/set). In conference play, she is averaging 11.21 assists per set (213 assists), good for second.
TIGERS OPEN HOMESTAND 3-0
• Mizzou picked up a trio of wins this past week to open its homestand. The Tigers swept Southeast Missouri (Oct. 9) and Alabama (Oct. 11) before earning a five-set victory over Tennessee (Oct. 13). MU concluded non-conference play in 2024 with a 9-3 mark.
• Mizzou notched a season-best .530 hitting percentage against SEMO.
• The Tigers totaled 10 aces against both Southeast Missouri and Tennessee. Mizzou has reached double-digit service aces seven time this season (six 10 ace matches in 2024). MU has tallied 10 aces in three SEC matches this season.
• Mizzou has picked up seven sweeps in 2024 after commencing the homestand with consecutive sweeps against SEMO and Alabama.
• The Tigers grabbed a season-best 71 digs against Tennessee. It marked the most the program has posted in a single match since recording 73 at Arkansas on October 8, 2023.
• Junior Regan Haith notched a season-best 10 kills on a .909 clip with two blocks against SEMO. She has totaled 10 kills three times this season, hitting .444 plus in all three occasions.
• Colleen Finney tallied a pair of blocks against Tennessee to surpass 250 in her collegiate career.
• Kiaraliz Perez Catala led Mizzou with three aces against Tennessee to match her NCAA Division I career high (third time with three aces). She finished the week with 14 digs and four aces.
• Maya Sands led the Mizzou defense this past week, registering 57 digs (5.18 digs/set) with 14 assists (1.27 assists/set) and three aces. She has compiled 16 or more digs in each of the last three matches. Sands wrapped the week with 22 digs and five assists against Tennessee. It marked her fourth 20-dig match in 2024.
• Mychael Vernon tallied 47 kills and 29 digs over the past week including a 21-kill, 14-dig double-double in the win over Tennessee.
• Janet deMarrais chipped in 35 kills (3.18 kills/set) including 16 against Tennessee.
MYCHAEL VERNON
• Mychael Vernon paces Mizzou with 247 kills (4.05 kills/set, seventh in SEC) on a .304 hitting percentage this season. She has notched 87 kills (4.58 kills/set, fourth in SEC) and 97.5 points (5.13 points/set) during conference action.
• Vernon has posted double-digit kills in each of the last three matches and seven double-doubles this season.
• The graduate transfer outside hitter ranks fourth in the SEC for kills and seventh for points (278.5 points, 4.57 points/set, eighth). She was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 30.
• Vernon, an Ossining, New York, native, has started in all 17 matches for Mizzou this season and has also notched 148 digs and 31.0 blocks, playing six rotations.
• She has registered double-digit kills in all but two matches this season.
• Vernon surpassed 200 career blocks in her collegiate career at Kentucky on Oct. 6 (173 at Oregon State).
• Vernon registered 17 kills on a career-best .640 hitting percentage, with seven digs and career-best matching three aces in her SEC debut at LSU on Sept. 27.
• Vernon followed that effort with a career-best matching 26 kills on a .311 clip in a five-set battle against Texas A&M on Sept. 29. She also added 11 digs, four blocks, and two assists, marking her sixth double-double of the season.
MAYA SANDS
• Maya Sands, the 2023 SEC Libero of the Year, leads Mizzou with 277 digs (4.54 digs/set) this season.
• She ranks second in the SEC for digs per set and third for total digs.
• The junior from Rock Falls, Illinois, has notched double-digit digs in every match this season. She has posted 20-plus digs in four matches in 2024.
• Sands notched a season-best 25 digs against Drake on Aug. 30.
• In SEC play, she has grabbed 81 digs (4.26 digs per set) which ranks third in the league.
ABOUT THE TIGERS
• The 2024 campaign marks the second for head coach Dawn Sullivan who led the Tigers to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2020 as she was selected SEC Coach of the Year this past fall.
• During her first season, Sullivan guided Missouri to an impressive 18-13 mark including a .500 (9-9) record in SEC play, surpassing the Tigers' combined win total from the past two seasons (nine in 2022, five in 2021).
• In SEC play, Missouri went on both three-match and four-match win streaks in 2023, while also securing five wins over top-50 AVCA (based on KPI, Pablo, and RPI rankings) teams and nine wins over top-100 AVCA teams including two ranked wins over Auburn (#23 and #24, Oct. 20 & Nov. 12).
• The eight-win overall improvement from 2022 (nine wins), tied for 12th nationally and ranked second among Power Five institutions.
• Mizzou received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll over the first two weeks of the season. The Tigers will face eight teams (nine matches) ranked in the preseason top 25.
• Mizzou returns six of seven starters from 2023 including a trio of All-SEC performers in Maya Sands (SEC Libero of the Year), Jordan Iliff and Sierra Dudley. Sands and Iliff also earned AVCA Southeast All-Region recognition.
LOOKING AHEAD
• Following Sunday's meeting with Mississippi State, Mizzou next heads to Arkansas (Oct. 25) and Oklahoma (Oct. 27) for a double SEC road weekend. Start times are set for 7 p.m., CT and 2 p.m., CT in the Friday and Sunday matchup.
