NORMAN, Okla. – Mizzou baseball dropped game two of its three-game Southeastern Conference series to No. 14 Oklahoma, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at Kimrey Family Stadium. Starting pitcher Brady Kehlenbrink struck out 10 in six innings of work, but the Mizzou offense was unable to generate run support for the sophomore lefty.
For the second day in a row, the Sooners (26-12, 9-8 SEC) struck first, getting on the board with a solo home run off the bat of Deiten LaChance in the bottom of the second inning. Oklahoma added a pair of runs to its column in the bottom of the third before Mizzou (20-19, 3-14 SEC) starter Brady Kehlenbrink escaped the jam without allowing any further damage.
A two-out double by OU's Jaxon Willits made it a 4-0 Sooner advantage in the fourth inning. From that point on, it was a pitchers' duel as Kehlenbrink settled in and posted a pair of scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth before turning it over to RHP Trey Lawrence out of the bullpen. Lawrence finished the game on the mound for the Tigers with two scoreless frames (1 H, 1 BB) and three strikeouts.
Mizzou chased hard-throwing OU starting pitcher Cameron Johnson from the game after 5.1 scoreless innings in which he allowed only three Mizzou baserunners and struck out five. However, the Sooner bullpen was dominant behind him as Jason Bodin and Jackson Cleveland combined to throw 3.2 hitless frames with three strikeouts and a pair of walks as OU claimed the game and the series win.
NOTEBOOK
- Kehlenbrink went six innings in his 10th start of the season, allowing four runs on eight hits while notching double-digit strikeouts (10) and issuing just a pair of walks. It marked the lefty's second-straight outing with 10 strikeouts and his third start this season with 10-plus (11 vs. UIC, March 8). He has struck out eight-plus batters in five of his 10 starts this season.
- Lawrence looked good in relief, hanging a pair of zeroes on the board in two innings of work, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three.
- The Tigers' offense mustered just two hits on the day – tied for its fewest of the season.
- Switch-hitting catcher Mateo Serna won an 11-pitch battle versus OU's Cameron Johnson with a line-drive single to right field in the second inning. He also reached base via walk.
- Shortstop Kam Durnin laced a single through the left side of the infield in the sixth and drew a walk in the eighth.
- Isaiah Frost got the start (13th of the season) at DH and reached base via walk.
The Tigers are back at Kimrey Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon for the series finale with the No. 14 Sooners at 2 p.m. CT on SEC Network+. All Mizzou baseball games can also be streamed on the Varsity Network by Learfield, with longtime play-by-play announcer Tex Little on the call and Matt Michaels providing color.
