Iowa State Edges Mizzou Gymnasts

Meggen Smiley tied her career high in the all-around for the second straight meet and Shannon Brown tied for first place on the uneven parallel bars, but with strong performances on vault and floor exercise the 16th-ranked Iowa State Cyclones edged the No. 24 Missouri Tigers, 191.925-191.675, Friday night in collegiate gymnastics competition at Hearnes Center.
Smiley scored 38.475 in the all-around to take second place behind Iowa State's Sarah Stayberg (38.65). Smiley, a junior from O'Fallon, Mo., placed in the top five in three of the four events and was second on the balance beam (9.625).
Missouri also got a second-place finish from senior Amanda Peterson (Shawnee, Kan.) who scored 9.8 on floor exercise.
The Tigers won the bars and beam events, but the Cyclones prevailed with season-high scores of 48.5 on vault and 48.8 on floor.
For Iowa State, it was its ninth straight win over Missouri, although the Tigers lead the overall series, 22-12. The two teams will hook up again in Ames, Iowa, on February 12, and in the Big 12 Championships in Columbia, March 27.
Missouri is in action again next Friday, hosting the No. 7 Nebraska Cornhuskers at Hearnes Center. The meet begins at 7:30 p.m.
