Iowa City, Iowa - The 42nd-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes (5-0/0-0 Big Ten) defeated the University of Missouri women's tennis team (7-2/0-0 Big 12), 6-1, Saturday in a match that was closer than the final score suggests. The Tigers took the Hawkeyes to the limit in each doubles match, as well as five of the six singles matches, as Tiger senior Chrissy Svetlic won the No. 4 singles match, and Mizzou took one set in four of the other five matches to give the unbeaten Hawkeyes a tough test.
"We were right there with them, we had out chances," Tiger Head Coach Blake Starkey said. "Hats off to Iowa, they're a good team, but so are we, and we definitely had a chance today."
Svetlic won her eighth singles match in a row by defeating Merel Beelen at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4. Each of her eight wins on the spring have been straight-set victories.
Tiger freshman Mallory Weber stepped back into the No. 1 spot after sitting out one match and playing No. 2 in another last weekend and gave Iowa's Jacqueline Lee all she could handle Saturday. After Lee took the first set, 6-0, Weber fought back to win the second, 4-6, but Lee won the third, 6-3, to take the match.
At No. 2, Tiger junior Jessica Giuggioli took the first set, 6-2, but then Iowa's Mili Veselinovic came back to win the second and third sets to take a, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, win.
Iowa's Alexis Dorr beat Mizzou sophomore Kaitlin Dunham in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.
In a see-saw battle at No. 5 singles UI's Lynne Poggensee-Wei took the first set, 6-4, Kaitlyn Ritchie then won the second, 6-4, and Poggensee-Wei finished it out by taking the third, 6-4. And after Tiger freshman Maureen Modesto jumped out to a one set lead at No. 6, Kelcie Klockenga won the second and third sets to take the match.
The Hawkeyes won all three doubles matches by slim margins to take the doubles point. Lee and Dorr defeated Svetlic and Weber, 8-6, at No. 1. Beelen and Vaselinovic edged Dunham and Sofia Ayala, 8-5, at No. 2, and at No. 3, Kayla Berry and Poggensee-Wei beat Giuggioli and Ritchie, 9-8 (3).
Mizzou will now head to Iowa's capital city of Des Moines to face the Drake Bulldogs Sunday at 10 am.
