Tennis Advances Three at Day 2 of ITA Central Regionals

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Mizzou Tennis advanced two of its three doubles teams, as well as a Tiger through the Consolation Singles draw, on Day 2 of the ITA Central Regional Championships Presented By Oracle.
Senior Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Serena Nash (Bradford, England) posted the upset of the day, defeating Wichita State's No. 16-nationally ranked, and No. 3 tournament seeded, pair of Fatima Bizhukova and Gabriela Porubin, 8-6. Mizzou's own nationally ranked squad, No. 32 and No. 4 seeded senior Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) and freshman Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal), defeated Arkansas' Natsuho Arakawa and Agne Cepelyte, 8-5.
Mizzou's fortunes in the singles draw flip-flopped. All five Tigers who won their opening matches on Thursday lost on Friday to end their tournament runs, but sophomore Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) won both of her matches in the consolation singles draw in straight sets to advance to the Round of 16.

"We got off to a good start in doubles with Clare and Serena getting a solid win, and Amina and Marta coming up with another win as well," said Head Coach Colt Gaston. "In singles, we didn't execute on the big points today, and it cost us. I thought Mackenzy did a good job bouncing back today and getting two wins in her singles matches. We look forward to getting back out there tomorrow and continuing to build."
