Tigers move to 8-1 on the season
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou Tennis team swept a pair of matches Saturday at the Mizzou Tennis Complex, defeating Tulane by a 4-1 score and sweeping South Dakota State, 5-0.
For the nine time in as many matches, Mizzou (8-1) won the doubles point in both contests. In the morning session, the Tigers fought back from a 1-0 hole to win matches at No. 2 and No. 3. Sophomore Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and freshman Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) clinched the doubles point vs. Tulane with a 6-4 win.
Singles was another back-and-forth affair, reminiscent of Mizzou's matchup last weekend at Virginia Tech, before pulling away. Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) started things off with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 4, and fellow senior co-captain Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) capped off the match with at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Tulane's Alex Alegre.
In the afternoon, the Tigers hit the pedal early and didn't look back. For the second straight weekend, Middlebrooks had a perfect match. She and Wright cruised to a 6-0 win in doubles, then had her own 6-0, 6-0 singles win. Raley followed next with a 6-2, 6-0 win, then Wright ended the day with a match-clinching 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Mizzou's wins were even more impressive when considering sophomore Serena Nash (Bradford, England), who has played at No. 1 singles and doubles for most of the spring, was back home in her native country to attend her brother's wedding.
"I was very proud of the girls for getting two hard-fought wins today," said Head Coach Colt Gaston. "We spoke a lot about finishing matches today before we started, and I thought the girls did a good job of that down the stretch. We also had a great crowd today, and it really helped set the tone in the matches. We look forward to continuing to build this week and preparing for Minnesota on Friday."
