Mizzou Basketball Game Notes
STORYLINES
- Mizzou is coming off a 64-54 road win over Temple, a 2019 NCAA Tournament team that returned all but one contributor from last season. It marked Mizzou's first true road win of the season and the eighth under head coach Cuonzo Martin.
- The Tigers hadn't won a true road game over a Division I opponent since 2014 before Martin's arrival. Temple lost for just the third time at home since the beginning of the 2018-19 campaign.
- Mizzou returns home to face SIU-Carbondale for the eighth time in program history and the first time since a 72-59 victory in Columbia, Mo., on Nov. 12, 2013. The Tigers are 6-1 all-time against the Salukis, with the only loss coming on Nov. 26, 1976. Mizzou has won six consecutive meetings in the series, going an undefeated 4-0 at home during that stretch.
- Mizzou graduate Ronnie Suggs is a fixture in the Salukis' lineup. He earned his bachelor's degree in Communication from Mizzou in May of 2019 before opting to finish his final season of eligiblity as a graduate transfer at Southern Illinois.
- Mizzou's nine opponents thus far this season are a combined 56-24, a .700 winning percentage. In terms of past oppostion's overall record, Mizzou has the nation's 18th-toughest schedule. Southern Illinois is just the second Mizzou opponent in 10 games to enter its matchup with the Tigers with more than one loss.
- Mizzou held Temple to 54 points in its last outing, the Owls' fewest points at home since Jan. 4, 2018 vs. Cincinnati. After the stifling defensive performance on the road, Mizzou ranks 28th nationally and fourth among SEC teams (behind Kentucky, Arkansas and Tennessee) in KenPom's adjusted defensive efficiency metric, allowing 90.3 points per 100 possessions.
- Mizzou allows only 59 points per game, which ranks 22nd nationally. When the Tigers have held teams to fewer than 60 points they are 5-0 this season. Mizzou has held seven of its first nine opponents to 63 of fewer points. Only 28 teams nationally have held at least seven opponents to 63 or fewer points in a game so far this season.
- The Tigers are cashing in at the charity stripe through nine games, making 74.1 percent of their attempts, the fourth-highest clip in the SEC. That's on pace to rank as the sixth-highest single-season team free throw percentage mark in program history.
COMING OFF SIGNIFICANT WIN
- Mizzou dealt Temple just its third home loss since the beginning of the 2018-19 campaign and the first since Cincinnati downed the Owls at the Liacouras Center, 72-68, on Jan. 27, 2019.
- It also marked Temple's third home nonconferece loss since Dec. 28, 2016.
- The Tigers won 64-54. Only three teams have gone on the road and beaten Temple by double-digits since 2013 - Mizzou, Villanova and Louisville.
- Temple shot just 2-of-21 from 3-point range in the loss to Mizzou, its worst shooting performance of the season. It marked the third time this decade that Temple shot 10 percent or worse from beyond the arc in a game and the first time at home during that span.
- Mizzou stifled Temple defensively all night, limiting the Owls to 54 points. Mizzou is the seventh team to come in to the Liacouras Center and hold Temple to 55 or fewer points since 2010. Three days after Mizzou's suffocating performance, Temple scored 108 points in a win over Philly Big 5 rival St. Joe's.
ROAD TRIUMPHS
- Mizzou picked up its eighth road win since Martin was hired with its victory at Temple. Six have come against SEC teams and two against a pair of American Conference opponents (UCF & Temple).
- The Tigers have 23 wins in 93 road games during the current decade, winning 24.7 percent of games away from home. Martin has eight of those 23 wins in just over two-plus seasons at the helm, winning 35 percent of road games during his tenure.
- Mizzou's last three true road wins have all come via double-digits, with an average margin of victory of 19.3 points per contest (64-54 at Temple; 64-39 at Georgia; 66-43 at Texas A&M).
STOUT DEFENSE
- Mizzou has held seven of its nine opponents below their current season scoring average. Six of those seven teams were held at least 10 points under their season scoring average.
- Mizzou is now 20-0 under Cuonzo Martin when holding its foe to 59 or fewer points, and has won 27 of its last 28 games overall when doing that.
- Mizzou is 5-0 this season when holding opponents to fewer than 60 points. The offense seems to feed off of defensive success. In the five victories, Mizzou is averaging 72.4 points per game, but in the four losses thus far, the Tigers are managing just 59 points per contest.
- In Mizzou's two true road games at Xavier and Temple, opponents averaged 52.5 points per game in regulation. Xavier managed just 51 points at the end of regulation on Nov. 12, its fewest in a game since scoring just 47 vs. Cincinnati on Dec. 8, 2018. The Musketeers have scored 51 or fewer points in regulation three times since 2013 after Mizzou's strong defensive performance.
- Mizzou clamped down to hold Incarnate Word to 42 points in its season opener, the fewest yielded in a season-opener since holding Canisius to 42 in the 1991-92 season opener. The Tigers followed by allowing only 56 points to defending Horizon League champion Northern Kentucky. The Norse were held to 56 or fewer points just once last season (53 at UCF - Nov. 24, 2018) and have mustered 56 of fewer only nine times since 2015.
- Morehead State managed just 52 points against Mizzou, the Eagles' fewest points in a game since scoring 49 against Northern Kentucky on Dec. 2, 2017. Since 2010, Morehead State had scored 52 or fewer points in a game just 14 times before meeting up with Martin's defensive stalwarts.
- Mizzou is allowing just 59.0 points per game. That ranks third in the SEC, 22nd nationally and 11th among power conference teams. The Tigers haven't held opponents under 60 points per game in a campaign since 1981-82, four years before the shotclock was introduced.
