URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, IL – The University of Missouri tennis team (2-2) heads across the border to face the University of Illinois (5-3) in the annual Braggin' Rights match on Sunday, Feb. 13.
So Far This Season
The Tigers began with one of the toughest season openers in the nation. Mizzou traveled to the top-ranked Texas Longhorns to kickstart their season after not playing a match for nearly four months.
The team won seven games during the doubles matches and 42 games during singles play. Valentina Vazquez took down No. 117 Malaika Rapolu in the first set of her singles match and Elys Ventura forced a third set against Allura Zamarripa. Gabriela Martinez was also victorious in 10 of her games against No. 26 Kylie Collins.
Mizzou lost to No. 1 Texas and traveled up to No. 22 Oklahoma State for their second match in three days. Bronte Murgett and Martinez saw their first doubles win of the season, defeating Dariya Detkovskaya and Oona Orpana, 6-1.
Facing the Fighting Illini
Illinois' last three wins come against Illinois State, Florida International and Chicago State. The team has faced two ranked opponents and lost to both (No. 11 Baylor and No. 18 Florida State).
The Illini came close in their match against No. 18 Florida State, losing 3-4. Josie Frazier and Ashley Yeah pulled in two points for Illinois with the third being a default win because Florida State only competed with five players.
The Tigers are set to face the Illini at 12 p.m. at the Atkins Tennis Center. Live stats and streaming will be available through the website as well as on Twitter (@MizzouTennis).
