COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou softball (27-28, 8-15 SEC) dropped game two against No. 8/9 Tennessee (42-8, 16-7 SEC) 4-2 on senior night on Friday, May 1, at Mizzou Softball Stadium.
Junior Stefania Abruscato went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored, as junior Marissa McCann picked up the loss and is 10-10 this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mizzou got on the board in the first inning, as it converted a leadoff walk into a run, as junior Stefania Abruscato scored freshman Addy Waits with a single down the right-field line. The Tigers continued their threat by loading the bases with one out but left the inning with a 1-0 lead after two-straight strikeouts.
Tennessee matched the score at the top of the third with a solo home run that landed just fair near the right field foul pole. The Lady Volunteers continued to build their lead at the top of the fourth, as two errors from the Mizzou defense led to two runs on a single to left field. McCann's day ended after those two runs crossed the plate, as she ended with 3.2 innings pitched, allowing one earned run and six hits.
In relief, senior Courtney Donahue pitched one inning, allowing one hit and one earned run, as freshman Abby Carr replaced her. Carr came in the top of the fifth with runners on first and second. Tennessee added another one with the switch as it hit a single up the middle, making it 4-1.
Mizzou cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning – 4-2 – as Abruscato opened it up with a double, before advancing to third. She later scored on a groundout by freshman Sidney Forrester.
The Lady Volunteers brought in Karlyn Pickens to close the game and did just that as the Tigers dropped the second game of the series 4-2.
