The Tigers won the doubles point, but fell for just the second time this season.
KANSAS CITY, KAN. – Mizzou Tennis (4-2) ended its three-game win streak with a 4-2 loss to Wichita State (3-1) on Sunday morning in Kansas City, Kan. Junior Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) won both of her matches for Mizzou, bringing her overall win total to a team best 21 in the 2016-17 campaign.
The Tigers took the doubles point for the fourth time this season. Senior Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) continues to be a dominant doubles player as she and her partner senior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal) won the No. 2 doubles match, 6-2. This was the second straight doubles victory for the pairing. They just beat Kansas State's No. 2 doubles team on Friday. With the win, Spearman holds a team best 4-1 record in doubles play this spring season, and sits just one win away from achieving 50 career doubles victories.
Mizzou clinched the doubles point off of a gritty win by Ismail and her partner, freshman Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). They took the No. 3 doubles match 7-6 (5) improving Middlebrooks' double record this spring to a perfect 2-0 and giving Ismail her team-best 11th doubles win of the season.
Singles play went Wichita State's way as Mizzou only got one win, coming at No. 5 singles by Ismail. This marks the first time this season that Mizzou has lost a match in which the Tigers won the doubles point. They are now 3-1 in that scenario and 1-1 when losing the doubles point.
Mizzou continues action Sunday at 6 p.m. C.T. against UMKC.
