Tigers head into SEC Tournament on two-match winning streak
ATHENS, Ga. – The Mizzou Tennis team closed the regular season on a winning note, sweeping a pair of neutral-site matches over Savannah State on Saturday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The morning began with the final match of the SEC regular season, as No. 8 Georgia posted a 4-0 win over the Tigers. Senior co-captain Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) was just a game away from notching her 11th singles win of the season, and first in conference play, but the Bulldogs (15-5, 10-3) were able to clinch the match with three singles wins before she could finish her match.
With the SEC season in their rearview mirror, the Tigers (13-16, 0-13) were able to continue their success vs. non-conference opponents. All but one of Mizzou's league matches came against an ranked foe, while the Tigers were 13-3 against unranked competition this year.
In the opener vs. Savannah State, freshman Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win for her 15th singles win of the year. That opened the floodgates for a Mizzou lineup that won four matches handily; only two of the 10 completed sets in the first match vs. Savannah State went past 6-2.
Things were similar in the nightcap. Both of Mizzou's senior co-captains, Ismail and Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.), romped through with 6-0, 6-0 wins. Freshman Ally Noback (Alpharetta, Ga.) joined the fun with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 for her second singles win of the season, and freshman Taylor Gruber (Spicewood, Texas) clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2.
When all was said and done, both Gruber and Raley nabbed a pair of wins on the day, with six of the eight Tigers earning a victory in either match. Seven of Mizzou's eight players enter next week's SEC Tournament on a singles winning streak.
