COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Baseball dropped both games of a double header to sixth-ranked Auburn by scores of 4-3 (10 inn.) and 9-2, respectively, at Taylor Stadium on Saturday.
The Tigers (15-5, 0-3 SEC) used a two-out, eighth-inning rally in the first game of the day to tie it at 3-3 and force extra innings, fueled by back-to-back RBI singles by Kam Durnin and Jase Woita. The Tigers ultimately dropped game one in extras, 4-3, after Auburn (17-2, 3-0 SEC) scratched across the winning run in the 10th.
Game two of the day was another pitchers' duel early as the game entered the seventh inning with a score of 1-1. Lefty starter Brady Kehlenbrink ran into some trouble in the seventh inning after tossing six strong frames, and Auburn was able to bust the game open with a seven-run seventh. The big inning proved to be the difference as Mizzou fell in the finale, 9-2.
GAME ONE RECAP
It was another pitchers' duel in game two of the weekend series, with both starting pitchers surrendering one run each through the first six innings. Auburn was able to build a 3-1 lead before Mizzou answered in the eighth inning to tie the game at 3-3. The comeback effort proved to not be enough as Auburn was able to regain the lead in extras and win the game in 10 innings.
RHP Josh McDevitt was locked in early, throwing 6.1 innings and giving up two runs on just three hits, striking out a career-high 10 Auburn batters while walking just two. From the final out of the first inning through the first out of the fourth inning, McDevitt recorded eight-straight outs via punchout. McDevitt allowed no hits through the first 4.2 innings and was relieved in the seventh inning after recording one out and exceeding 100 pitches.
Woita powered the Missouri offense, getting things going for the Tigers in the second inning when he delivered a lead-off double into the gap in right center field. Later in the inning, he scored the teams' first run of the game on a groundout double-play off the bat of Mateo Serna.
Auburn tied the game at a run apiece in the fifth inning with an RBI groundout. They later took the lead in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly before adding another run in the eighth inning with a bases-loaded walk to take a 3-1 lead.
Mizzou had a swift response, starting with a lead-off HBP for pinch-hitter Sam Parker and a strategic sacrifice bunt by Eric Maisonet. An additional walk from Kaden Peer was followed by clutch RBI singles from Durnin and Woita to even the game at 3-3.
The Missouri offense was unable to capitalize in the ninth after a lead-off single from Serna. Pierre Seals followed with a single down the left field line, but Serna was thrown out trying to advance first to third, and the Tigers couldn't string together anything else together in the ninth.
Auburn scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning and shut down the Missouri offense in the bottom half to clinch the series victory over Mizzou.
