COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Baseball extended its winning streak in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon at Taylor Stadium, erasing an 11-run deficit to defeat UIC, 13-12, in a game that started on Friday and ended nearly 24 hours later due to a weather suspension.
The Tigers (13-2, 0-0 SEC) used that win to springboard themselves to a dominant 7-0 shutout of the Flames (4-9, 0-0 MVC) in the second game of a "hybrid" double header, extending their winning streak to 11 games and cementing the best start to a season for Mizzou since 2017.
The Flames did not score a run all day as the Tigers posted 13 scoreless innings on the day and 15-straight going back to Friday.
GAME ONE RECAP
Kam Durnin started the game with a solo home run - his first hit and his first home run as a Tiger - to give the Tigers an early lead. The Flames used a big second inning to plate nine runs and jump out to an eight-run lead.
The Flames plated three more runs in the third with a pair of doubles and single, pushing the UIC lead to 11 runs.
Eric Maisonet drove in Kaden Peer in the bottom of the fourth to kick start a three-run frame for the Tigers. Maisonet's RBI was followed by a pair of RBI singles from Chris Patterson and Tyler Macon to make the score 12-4, Flames.
A thunderstorm hit Taylor Stadium in the bottom of the fifth which caused the game to be suspended and resumed on Saturday afternoon. The rain delay brought good fortune for the Tigers, who resumed the second game of the series right where they left off with Maisonet driving in a run to cut the deficit to 12-5 in the bottom of the fifth.
Mizzou jumped on UIC relievers in the sixth inning, tallying four runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame. Patterson began the offensive attack with a single and then stealing a pair of bags. Macon and Jase Woita all drove in runs to cut the deficit, with Durnin sneaking a double down the left field line to keep the inning alive. Cameron Benson capped off the inning driving in two more runs to trim the Flames' lead to three runs after six full innings.
The Tigers kept the bats rolling in the seventh, inching closer to a complete comeback. Woita knocked in a pair of runs with a double to right-center field to bring the Tigers within a run.
Tigers' reliever Sam Rosand struck out the side, shutting down the UIC offense in the eighth. In the bottom of the frame, Benson came back to the plate and delivered a two-run shot to right-center field that erased the once 11-run deficit and put Mizzou in front, 13-12, for its first lead since the first inning.
After a UIC single to start the ninth and a sac bunt to move the runner into scoring position, Kaden Peer made a diving catch in center which held the tying run on second. Rosand continued his domination and closed out the game to earn his first collegiate win, striking out five Flames over 2.1 scoreless innings.
